I did it!!!!

3 Sep

I was selected as a Broadcom MASTERS semi-finalist!  That’s top 300 in the country and two weeks from now, they’ll narrow it down to the top 30.  Those 30 will go to Washington DC and meet the president, inventors, astronauts, and more!  It’s going to be a stressful 2 weeks of waiting.  I AM SOOOOO EXCITED!  To make it even better, my friend Becky Dana also got selected as a semi-finalist.  That’s awesome!  Society for Science and the Public does such a spectacular job with this event that I think everyone should do whatever they can to get nominated.  Check out the announcement page here for more info: https://student.societyforscience.org/broadcom-masters-2014-semifinalists

    Wow, this is really awesome!

I’m a LAMP developer and I’ve got 5 little girls that I to get into STEM fields. My oldest daughter is 7 next month and I want to get her stated with Raspberry Pi – something fun yet easy to get started with. What would you suggest as a first step?

That’s difficult to answer. It really depends on what she’s interested in. If she wants to be an engineer, then get a breadboard and have her start building circuits and robots. If she wants to be a computer scientist, then start working on blinking LEDs and spinning servo motors. This is the best way to learn coding because programming is boring when your programs only live on the computer screen. But, when they come alive through the GPIO pins, it’s awesome!

I was confused for a minute because my science fair project this year uses a process called LAMP. I was like, “How did he know about my new project?” In this case, LAMP means Loop Mediated Amplification. But, now I see that LAMP Developer means Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.
